OUR APPROACH

Where the nature and tourism move together

Elafonisos is not a backdrop for tourism. It is a living ecosystem — fragile, generous, and irreplaceable. Our approach begins from a simple belief: the island gives,
and so must we.

For too long, the dominant model of island tourism has treated nature as a given, a free resource to be consumed during peak months, then left behind.
Elafonisos Eco exists to challenge that model, working alongside visitors, local businesses, and residents to build something more durable.

This means encouraging choices that leave a lighter footprint: staying in eco-friendly accommodations, exploring the island by bike or on foot, conserving water, and understanding the extraordinary biodiversity that makes this place worth visiting in the first place.
It also means thinking beyond summer — recognising that Elafonisos in autumn or spring holds its own quiet wonder, and that the people who live here deserve a year-round economy.

FOCUS AREAS

Four Ways We Are
Working to Change
Tourism

Quality and Environmental Responsibility

Elevating the visitor experience means raising the bar on how tourism is practiced.
We support eco-friendly accommodations, promote low-impact activities — hiking, biking, kayaking — and encourage the use of renewable resources. Awareness campaigns help visitors understand the  fragility and beauty of the island’s ecosystems,  encouraging them to leave Elafonisos better than they found it.

VISITOR AWARENESS

A Destination for every Season

Peak summer brings beauty — and pressure. By developing experiences that showcase Elafonisos beyond July and August, we aim to smooth the flow of visitors across the year. Birdwatching in the wetlands, archaeological walks in the cooler months, local gastronomy, and cultural festivals: each of these opens a different door to the island, and keeps the local economy breathing through winter.

Staying Longer, Living More Slowly

The island rewards those who linger.
We are building an ecosystem of experiences — guided nature walks, snorkeling in the protected marine area, cycling routes, honey-making workshops — that give visitors a reason to stay for a week, not a weekend. Better connectivity and partnerships with local families create the conditions for a more immersive, generous kind of visit.

Knowledge as a Foundation for Change

Sustainable tourism does not happen by itself.
It requires the people who run hotels, lead tours, manage restaurants, and shape local policy to truly understand what is at stake, and to have the practical tools to act on it. Our training programs cover eco-friendly operations, resource management, waste reduction, and communicating environmental values to visitors in a way that enhances their experience.

ON THE GROUND

Keeping Elafonisos Clean, One Cigarette at a Time

Cigarette butts are the most littered item on beaches worldwide. Elafonisos Eco has installed dedicated collection points across the island — on beaches, in the village, and near the port — making it easy for residents and visitors to dispose of cigarette waste responsibly.
These ballot-style bins turn disposal into an engaging action, encouraging participation while protecting the island’s ecosystems from toxic waste.
