7 PILLARS OF

Marine
Protection

Our marine protection strategy covers a comprehensive range of actions — from direct species conservation to policy advocacy, eco-tourism, and community education.

01

Combat Invasive Species
to Preserve Native Biodiversity

Marine invasive species threaten Elafonisos’ ecosystems by outcompeting native organisms, disrupting food chains, and altering habitats.

Local fishers are directly affected, as declining native fish populations undermine their livelihoods and traditional practices.

Through monitoring, removal dives, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with researchers and the fishing community, we work to control the spread and restore the natural balance, protecting both biodiversity and the people who depend on healthy seas.

02

Protect and Monitor Caretta‑Caretta Turtle Populations

The Caretta-Caretta (loggerhead sea turtle) is vital to marine ecosystems but increasingly threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

With our volunteers and scouts, we patrol nesting beaches, protect habitats, and collect data that feeds into local and global conservation strategies.
Through awareness campaigns and collaboration with conservation organisations, we work to ensure these turtles can thrive alongside the community of Elafonisos.

03

Propose and Advocate for a Marine Protected Area

Posidonia oceanica meadows and coral reefs are vital for marine life and coastal health. They provide shelter for many species, protect the shore from erosion, and help fight climate change by absorbing carbon. However, these important habitats are under threat from activities like pollution, anchoring, and rising ocean temperatures.

Safe Zone for
Regeneration

By restricting harmful activities within the MPA, we aim to create safe zones where Posidonia meadows and coral reef can regenerate and thrive.

Research &
Policy

Through scientific research, community engagement, and collaboration with policymakers, we advocate for the designation of MPA as a cornerstone of our conservation efforts.

04

Advocate for Enforcing a No‑Take Zone

A No-Take Zone prohibits all fishing and extractive activities, giving marine ecosystems the space to recover, rebuild fish populations, and restore biodiversity. Elafonisos Eco supports the establishment of such a zone around the island as a key conservation strategy. Working with local authorities, fishermen, and conservation groups, we promote a balanced approach that protects marine life while sustaining the livelihoods that depend on healthy seas.

05

Support the development of a Diving Park

A Diving Park in Elafonisos would offer a unique opportunity to combine eco-tourism with education and conservation, showcasing the island’s stunning underwater ecosystems — from Posidonia meadows and coral reefs to diverse marine wildlife.

The park would feature guided dives, snorkeling tours, and educational programs designed to inform visitors about marine biodiversity and the conservation challenges facing the Mediterranean.
Sustainable diving practices would be enforced to minimize environmental impact, and part of the proceeds would directly support local conservation efforts.

Elafonisos Eco aims to collaborate with local businesses, dive professionals, and conservation groups to bring this vision to life — boosting the island’s economy through responsible tourism while inspiring visitors to become active advocates for marine protection.

06

Mitigate plastic pollution

Plastic pollution harms marine wildlife and disrupts coastal ecosystems.
Elafonisos Eco tackles this through regular beach cleanups, recycling promotion, and encouraging alternatives to single-use plastics among local communities, businesses, and visitors. Through educational campaigns, we inspire sustainable habits, reducing plastic consumption and improving waste disposal, to protect the marine environment and keep Elafonisos a pristine destination for future generations.

07

Education and Training About Marine Conservation

Education is the foundation of lasting conservation. Through workshops, seminars, and hands-on training, Elafonisos Eco equips locals and visitors with knowledge about marine biodiversity, sustainable fishing, and ecosystem protection. By working with schools, businesses, and community groups, we integrate conservation into daily island life — building a community that actively values and protects its marine environment.
